What is a workplace communication-benchmarking program?

An English proficiency-benchmarking project involves administering language assessment across a department, division, company, organization, region, country, or multiple countries.

The process establishes benchmarks, which becomes guidelines for aligning levels of language ability to job requirements and functionality.

Measurable benefits for completing workplace communication benchmarking—

Benchmarks can be used for external or internal comparisons to remain competitive, respond to customer feedback or time-to-market challenges, or to develop and integrate new markets more quickly by helping the organization understand its position within the industry or market sector (regionally, nationally and globally) and to

  • provide a reliable basis for performance management evaluation or goal-setting and strategy implementation
  • screen applicants during hiring and selection processes - avoid hiring mistakes or make more informed decisions about job promotion and/or global workforce mobility assignments
  • identify English language proficiency requirements in job postings and/or advertising
  • ensure that employees have the language proficiency level that aligns with specific job requirements
  • use data to evaluate or confirm the language proficiency needed across different locations
  • identify employee and team training and development needs and English communication improvement opportunities
  • provide general framework for developing well-defined goals to improve employee productivity and performance
  • place employees into appropriate workplace English development classes to maximize learning results
  • evaluate and confirm the value of workplace English training courses by administering pre- and post-assessment tests in context with relevant job benchmarks
  • help employees understand organizational communication standards, to support career growth and strengthen individual performance

Benchmarking involves questionnaires or surveys and testing developed by G2nd Systems and other organizations.

G2nd Systems correlates and aggregates results, reported in accordance with client guidelines and requirements. Benchmarking should only be completed in conjunction with other company evaluation processes and cut-score decisions are made solely by client organizations.

G2nd Systems facilitates testing and reports results, but does not recommend or provide advice regarding specific English proficiency levels based upon job requirements. Please contact us to learn more about best practice approaches that organizations use to establish English proficiency level for specific job types, identify potential job requirement categories, conduct can-do studies across groups of employees, develop benchmarking projects and potential pilot-programs (to be deployed across the organization based upon how English is used in the workplace context).
